Books Before Boys voiced its discontent with the recent allegation against Deputy Minister Isaac Doe for the alleged brutality and humiliation of a woman. They consider his response to deny the claims against him to be a waste of time.
In a press release signed by Esther Jebbeh Weah, Secretary General and Mustapha Z. Sherman, Country Director, BBB said Being one of President Weah’s government officials, it is very disheartening and frustrating to learn that Deputy Minister Isaac Doe has been implicated in such an accusation.
They alleged that Minister Doe is working on modalities so that the situation does not escalate.
BBB calls on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, as well as the Office of President Weah, to review the situation and take appropriate action.
“It should be recalled that on September 2020, President George Weah made a proclamation announcing rape and all types of sexual and gender-based violence to be a National Emergency.
The Proclamation was issued in response to the continuous increase in rape and cases of sexual and gender-based violence in most parts of Liberia, despite the fact that the rape law is intended to serve as a deterrent to would-be perpetrators.
Recognizing the psychological harm that sexual and gender-based violence can cause, President George Weah established the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in response to the scourge of rape and other forms of SGBV, which primarily targets women, girls, boys, and other vulnerable people in Liberia.
We see the action of the aforementioned Taskforce to be slow and not result driven.”
The advocacy group also expressed horror at the news of a 17-year-old boy allegedly violating a 3-year-old girl at the Soul Clinic Community.
According to the medical report, the victim was lacerated six inches above her private part, with the laceration continuing towards her anus.
BBB terms such act as cruel and inhumane deed and convey serious resistance. They urged the government to promptly investigate the incident and provide justice to the victim.
The BBB said that they will collaborate with the victim’s family to ensure that justice is served.
