Judge Mameita Jabateh-Sirleaf, who was recently appointed to Criminal Court “D”, has expressed concern over the lack of funds available to expedite the prosecution of pretrial detainees.
She emphasized that it is the responsibility of judges to ensure that the rights of detainees are respected, and that prolonged detention amounts to a violation of those rights.
The Judge also highlighted that the 1986 Constitution was drafted with the intention of urging the government to allocate sufficient resources to ensure the swift prosecution of criminal cases.
