There is No Truth to the Rice Shortage Rumor, per Commerce Minister Diggs

Amid public speculation about the shortage of rice in the country, Liberia’s Commerce Minister Mawine Diggs has clarified that there is no shortage of rice.

Recently, several Liberians, primarily retailers across the country, became alarmed over the alleged shortage of the country’s staple food on the market.

Several of them spoke to reporters during the middle part of the week, disclosing that there was a hike in the price of rice and other major commodities by UCCI and other rice importers.

But speaking to reporters over the weekend in Monrovia, Commerce Minister Mawine Diggs noted that a survey conducted by the Ministry of Commerce showed that there is alot of rice on the Liberian market, stressing that there is no need for citizens to panic over the shortage of rice.

According to minister Diggs, the price of rice on the market remains at US$13 and indicated that citizens must report any case of hiking the price of rice by any business entity.
