Prominent CDC Member Joins Opposition Party, Backs Boakai’s Presidential Campaign

Representative Alex Grant, a prominent member of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) Legislative Caucus, has announced his support for Ambassador Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s presidential campaign.

Speaking to journalists at his Capitol Building office on Thursday, June 8th, 2023, Grant stated that he believes incumbent President George Manneh Weah harbors personal animosity towards him.

In a surprising turn of events, the Grand Gedeh County Electoral District #3 Representative also revealed that he has joined the opposition Unity Party (UP), which is headed by Mr. Boakai.

Grant pledged to back the former Liberian vice president’s bid for the presidency in the upcoming October elections.

Grant cited the CDC’s alleged failure to adhere to its own rules as the reason why he is leaving the party.

He claimed that he has voted for President Weah on numerous occasions but is unsure if he is one of the President’s favorites.

Furthermore, Grant alleged that “people” wrote a resolution to skip the primary process, which he views as unfair.

Grant expressed his concern about the CDC’s growth prospects if sitting lawmakers are unwilling to go for primaries to maintain their seats.

He argued that a consensus resolution to bypass primaries was not part of the framework document that the three parties comprising the CDC signed.

Grant insisted that people’s political will was suppressed.

Finally, Representative Grant announced his intention to run for the Senatorial seat in Grand Gedeh County, as per his constituents’ request.
