Rep. Gosuah Threatens to Stand Against Mineral Development Agreement with Arcelormittal

Grand Bassa County District #5 Representative Thomas Gosuah has threatened that the Legislative Caucuses of both Bassa and Nimba Counties will stand against the landmark Mineral Development Agreement signed by the Government of Liberia and the management of Arcelormittal .

Appearing on the Voice of Liberia in Monrovia, Representative Gosuah said his quest to prevent the passage of the agreement upon reaching the Plenary of the House of Representatives is based on the world’s leading steel company’s failure to live up to its social corporate responsibility in its agreement.

It can be recalled that on September 10 the government of Liberia and Arcelormittal signed a landmark Mineral Development Agreement intended to pave the way for the expansion of the company’s mining and logistics operation in Liberia.

But the Bassa lawmaker further said Arcelormittal Liberia has failed to satisfy the people of Bassa, Nimba and most especially Liberia, in terms of its agreement over the past years.

According to Representative Gosuah, it is unfair and disheartening that the leading steel company in the world will not provide things enshrined in its agreement, but has pleasure in depleting the country’s mineral sectors without benefits to the citizenry.

He named the issues of jobs creations, electrification of Bassa city, among other things, promised by Arcelormittal to provide to the people of Grand Bassa, something according to him, the company is yet to fulfill, as mentioned in their agreement.
