Liberian President Inaugurates New Sports Park in West Point Slum Community

On May 20, 2023, the President of Liberia, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah, proudly inaugurated the new West Point Sports pitch. The once neglected soccer field has undergone a major transformation and is now a modern, fully turfed, and up-to-date sports park that is set to bring joy and recreation to young people in the slum community.

Named after the late Albert Doe, a renowned player from West Point, the new sports pitch was unveiled in the presence of government officials and local administration members. President Weah, who had long envisioned creating a sports park in West Point, expressed his delight over the transformation, describing it as a significant step towards developing the country and providing opportunities for Liberian youth to showcase their talents.

Despite the challenges of limited space in the cramped community, the President pledged to extend similar facilities to other areas in the city and beyond. He announced plans to inaugurate another modern recreation center in Clara Town, where he grew up, and then move on to the D. Tweh Field in New Kru Town, with many other communities in line to follow subsequently.

President Weah emphasized the importance of keeping the sports park clean and safe, and open to all without discrimination. He called on the community to make maximum use of the facility and make it a hub of excellence for sports in Liberia. The President further reiterated his vision of hosting the African Cup of Nations, citing the massive transformation taking place in the sporting sector, particularly the upgrading of football facilities.
